Plaquenil can damage the retina of the eye, which can lead to blindness. This eMedTV page lists other side effects or complications that may occur with Plaquenil. Warnings and precautions on who should not use this drug are also listed on this page. If your ophthalmologist finds any signs of retinal damage, he or she will tell your primary care doctor or inflammatory disease specialist to stop Plaquenil treatment immediately. This will help you avoid permanent vision loss. Your other doctor will find another treatment for your disease. If you are taking hydroxychloroquine for a long period of time, your doctor will recommend frequent eye exams. It is very important that you keep these appointments. Hydroxychloroquine can cause serious vision problems. If you experience any changes in vision, stop taking hydroxychloroquine and call your doctor immediately.

I recently decided to stop taking Plaquenil because I was having constant chest pains even more so than I usually have due to Lupus. Since I have not taken it my chest feels so much better which is odd because chest pain is not listed as a side effect. Also I noticed that the Plaquenil I think was making me feel different but not in a good way. Aug 28, 2012 Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine takes a long time to get out of the system - up to 18 months. Be certain you and your physician agree you should discontinue it. HealthTap does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. For these services, please use HealthTap Prime or Concierge. See Additional Information. I was told I didn't have to taper it like prednisone, and that I shouldn't expect any rebound type of reaction like you get when your body adjusts to being off pred. But everyone is taking a different mix of drugs and maybe you're taking something I don't that would make your doctor's recommendation for you different.
