    Plaquenil and sunburn

I am concerned, and should have asked him about this, but thought about it after the fact... I had to off of Plaquenil in December after 2 months. I have heard that you need to stay out of the sun while on Plaquenil. I don't remember what the warnings were about the sun because I live in Michigan and we don't have much sun that time of year.

Photosensitivity or sun sensitivity is inflammation of the skin induced by the combination of sunlight and certain medications or substances. This causes redness of the skin and may look similar to sunburn. Both the photosensitizing medication or chemical and light source have to be present in order for a photosensitivity reaction to occur. The reaction is often immediate. It usually occurs after the first dose of a drug and within 24 hours of taking the drug and exposure to the sun. Symptoms include severe redness on the areas of skin exposed to light, akin to an exaggerated sunburn with severe tenderness. Lupus-Specific Skin Disease and Skin Problems Most people with lupus experience some sort of skin involvement during the course of their disease. In fact, skin conditions comprise 4 of the 11 criteria used by the American College of Rheumatology for classifying lupus.

Plaquenil reduces inflammation in many Rheumatic disorders, the mode of action is pretty complicated though so I shan't bore you with all the details, but basically it prevents your dendritic cells these are messengers for your immune system, if you will from interacting with your T-Cells a special type of white blood cell which through a convoluted and boring process, causes inflammation. Hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine are thought to have antitumor properties mainly because they inhibit autophagy, although they can also affect the growth and spread of tumor cells independent of this mechanism.1–4 Autophagy is a complex cellular mechanism that is thought to play a dual role in tumor growth progress – that is, preventing tumor initiation by suppressing chronic tissue damage, inflammation, and genome instability and sustaining tumor metabolism, growth, and survival via. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil Toxicity and Recommendations. Hydroxychloroquine has significantly less retinal toxicity and has largely replaced chloroquine as a treatment of inflammatory disease. Unfortunately, the retinal damage from these medications is largely irreversible, so it is critical to detect early retinal toxicity in the hopes of limiting the extent of visual loss.
