Why plaquenil should not be cut in half

Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Hi there, been on plaquenil for many years. Now I have recently gained some weight so my rheumatologist increased my dosage with the new guidelines. She told me to split the pill in half. I did read somewhere I can’t remember where it said not to split the plaquenil. Has anyone done this with results. Am suppose to take 340 mg now. Why so many pills are TOO BIG to swallow And why it's safe to crush or cut up some - but not others Drug manufacturers have total control over pills' shapes, sizes and colours Why did you cut your dose down if I may ask? Barbara/Tmir. Barbara, I started the antibioitic protocal about six years into the disease and started feeling better so I cut my Plaquenil doseage in half. My rheumo said not to do this until my labs returned to normal, but since they were close I did it anyway.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

  3. But a new study involving a commonly prescribed muscle relaxant suggests patients may not be getting what they think they are getting when they split pills. In pill splitting, a doctor may prescribe a pill with double the needed dose of medication, telling the patient to split the pills and only take half of a pill.

My rhematologist placed me on plaquenil in winter of 2015 after experiencing a flare 40% of my hair fell out in 5 weeks and I was ALWAYS exhausted. Even if I slept it was unbearable. I've been on it a year, reluctantly. I do not want to have to be maintained on any chemicals or pills. Plaquenil is generally well-tolerated, but side effects are possible. Common side effects linked to Plaquenil include nausea and diarrhea. Taking the medication with food eases nausea for most people taking the drug. Less common side effects include skin rashes, hair thinning, and weakness. At first I started to have maybe half a day here and there without arthritis pain, then the fatique started to go away. I'd like to report that I never have symtoms or flares anymore, but I do, but I think the Plaquenil makes the difference between being a sick person pre-plaquenil and a normal person who occationally feels sick.

Antimalarial Therapy in Patients Who Are Hydroxychloroquine. This is especially notable, given that the product monograph for hydroxychloroquine warns against the use of alternative AMs in hydroxychloroquine-hypersensitive patients. 5 Furthermore, this study supports findings across a variety of drug classes of a low percentage of recurrence at oral rechallenge in cases of nonsevere cutaneous adverse.
